Suzanne Archer won the Dobell Prize for Drawing in 2010 for her work Derangement, a confronting and frenetic drawing that features a kangaroo carcass, a wooden stump that looks like a severed horse head and other dead detritus that the artist has collected over the years.
Stepping into Su’s studio is like standing in a wunderkammer. It’s filled with bric a brac, taxodermied animals, skulls and other objects that, paradoxically, bring the space to life. We chatted about her process, her experience in sketching at Vet Science labs at the University of Sydney and how she goes about building a drawing.
